From my window I can look down on the square. On the right the church tower, on the left a cobbled street so Italian in nature that you feel as though you are living in a postcard. Via Antonia Calgagni. Establishments of stucco masonry, arches, a fountain, a tower, and doorways opening directly onto the strada. Up and down the street, warm aromas, airs flavoured with centuries of Italian tradition, and at the end, the walled garden with impossibly green fig trees, cypresses and oleanders, all tailored, and standing about the fountain like children’s drawings. Gravelled paths, and everywhere the townspeople strolling and chatting. They are dark and heavy-limbed in the main, but here and there one sees a truly handsome specimen – a woman perhaps, proud-eyed and bright as a poppy, swaying with bosom, massive cloud of hair, substantial arms, ankles and thighs, grand of hip and bottom, honey-coloured skin, moist and flowing with nourishment. If there is one word for these Italians it is ‘ripe’ – a nation of ripe women – some even overripe, the Italian foods tending to ripen even the very soul! In the hot airs of this Sunday evening, cottons hang softly damp and olive skins are powdered with the finest frostings of moisture. Everyone is talking – rich Italian vowels, as edible as the salamis hanging in the butcher’s window.
